Today Balinese is celebrating Galungan Day. Galungan is a Balinese holiday celebrating the victory of dharma over adharma. It marks the time when the ancestral spirits visit the Earth. The last day of the celebration is Kuningan, when they return. The date is calculated according to the 210-day Balinese calendar.
A strikingly beautiful ornament seen at Galungan is the penjor, a tall lavishly decorated bamboo pole erected in front of the gate of every house compound. The penjor is decorated with leaves, flowers, fruits, cakes, cloth, cuttings of rice, and palm-leaf ornaments. All these have symbolic meaning.
